When Renee Cook was at school, she always dreamed of becoming a teacher. She often found herself supporting fellow students, especially those who found school challenging. Life took her on a different path until her own children began their schooling journey at Our Lady of Lourdes Primary School, Toowoomba. Assisting students as a parent helper in such a welcoming environment reignited her passion and desire to be a teacher.
Renee initially chose Our Lady of Lourdes Primary School for her children because of the strong, supportive community that surrounded them and her family. This community instilled in them the values of kindness, compassion, resilience and persistence, as well as responsibility and respect for others. While studying for her teaching degree, she was fortunate to work as a School Officer at the school. This role allowed her to build a network of support among other School Officers and Teachers, who provided invaluable advice and guidance that assisted with her studies. Reflecting on the positive experiences she had at the school, she knew it was the perfect opportunity and exactly where she wanted to begin her teaching career.
Growing up in a small country town, Renee knew she would eventually leave to create opportunities for herself and her family. However, she also knew she would miss the strong sense of community she grew up with. Toowoomba offers the best of both worlds; it is large enough to provide numerous opportunities for work, education, and lifestyle interests, yet it retains that small-town feeling where everyone knows and supports each other.
Renee’s favourite part of teaching is getting to know her students and discovering how she can best support them. Building strong relationships with them ensures they feel safe in her classroom and can be courageous in their learning. She believes that unless students trust you, they will be reluctant to be themselves and truly honest about their understanding.
